I think it is possible we would do a read along around July/August. I'll be certain to do a post when we have decided on something so that everyone can find the selected book.

I'm thinking it would be something like a Sharin Penman, Jean Plaidy or Anya Seton novel!

I've read The Last Queen as well and became fascinated by the story. I also tend to believe in the idea that she was a woman wronged vs simply mad.
Also interesting to me are the similarities between Juana and her sister. Poor Katherine of Aragon became "inconvenient" as soon as Henry VIII's eye wandered and she eventually was locked up as well.

This book looks like a great read! Thanks for the giveaway!

JR Tomlin, how right you are! Juana was the original "inconvenient" woman.

I'm enjoying all the comments. I see I'm not the only person angered by how women were treated. But I like to think that Juana won in her own way. She allowed her imprisonment, for reasons explained in the book. What makes me angry is that her menfolk didn't believe that she would give away her right to rule, so they insisted in treating her roughly. They must have felt horribly guilty about taking her powers and so took Draconian measures to make sure she didn't take them back. They were too emotionally stunted to understand her motives.

I just had to comment on this excellent guest post by Lynn. I became fascinated with Juana years ago when I watched the foreign film, Juana la Loca. Years later, I read C.W. Gortner's The Last Queen and my fascination turned to admiration. I am in the camp that defends Juana, of course. We all know how women were suppressed in those days, especially if the man had something to gain by it.

I'm not eligible for the giveaway since I'm co-host of this blog, but luckily I already have the book so I'm good. Just have to get around to reading it. =O)

It sounds like a fascinating reprise of an old injustice. There is nothing unusual about an "inconvenient" woman being locked up as insane. The Victorians elevated it to an art form. It's happened many times, but this time had some long results. I'll definitely pick this novel up.

Another woman in history who thinks and acts outside the male defintion of "normal" -- in this case falling in love with her husband--is excoriated by history. Thank God for modern thinking although even women today have a difficult time when they go against the grain.

I have always been so interested in Juana's story. I am of the opinion that she wasn't crazy. It certainly could be as Cullen describes above - when it's a historical case of he said she said - the guy usually won. I would love to be entered for this giveaway.
